A message from the Head of Development and Alumni Relations

"Another academic year is drawing to a close, with dissertations and final coursework being submitted and exams being held across campus.

Students are looking forward to their Summer Ball being held in the Main University Building this weekend. The event is now a full day and nighttime party with three stages of live music, a funfair, a casino and street food vendors. I wonder how different it is to your final days as a student鈥 We鈥檇 love to hear your stories at alumni@bangor.ac.uk

Whether you were in full party-mode at the Summer Ball celebrating with your friends or simply made the most of being able to relax and enjoy your surroundings, I hope that you have great memories of your last days at the University to cherish."

黑料不打烊 Fund supports students to participate in national primary care conference

Through alumni donations, the 黑料不打烊 Fund has enabled high-performing early-stage pharmacy students at the North Wales Medical School to take part in a nationally recognised academic and professional development experience.

Six students, three from Foundation Year and three from Year 1, were selected to take part in a two-day immersive academic and cultural visit to London. The programme combined curated activities at University College London and the British Library with attendance at the British Medicinal Chemistry Society Mastering MedChem X symposium, held at the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Alumna recognised in 50 top PR award

Congratulations to 黑料不打烊 Alumni Advisory Board member Jane Griffin (French, 1993) for being recognised as one of the top 50 independent PR consultants in the UK for the second year running in the .

Following a 30 year career in journalism, corporate communications, B2B PR and crisis communication, Jane founded her company Positive Story PR Consultancy in February 2021.

Positive Story PR Consultancy is a specialist B2B PR consultancy which helps engineering, industrial technology, and infrastructure clients win new business and investment through strategic public relations. A Chartered PR Practitioner, Jane also delivers coaching, workshops and courses that show teams how to identify news, engage journalists and use PR strategically to support business growth.

We鈥檙e so pleased that Jane鈥檚 work has been recognised by the Independent Impact 50 Awards. Well done Jane!

Self-funding UK alumni who have graduated from an undergraduate programme at 黑料不打烊 can receive a 20% discount on one of our eligible taught Masters degrees.

International alumni can take advantage of a 拢1,000 tuition fee discount for any degree programme too which is also offered to their immediate family members (spouse/siblings/children/grandchildren).

Dr Perrin's Legacy: Inspiring the next generation of environmental leaders

Four ground-breaking environmental research projects are currently underway and shaping the future of our planet. Each one of these projects is a chapter in advancing scientific knowledge while equipping our students and researchers with the skills and experiences they need to become leaders in environmental science. The journey from undergraduate placements to cutting鈥慹dge research demonstrates the impact of donor generosity in nurturing talent and driving innovation.

This progress has been made possible through the extraordinary legacy of alumnus, Dr Robert Perrin (Soil Science, 1948), whose passion for understanding and protecting the natural world lives on through his gift to environmental research. Three 黑料不打烊 academics elected fellows of the Learned Society of Wales

 has this year named three academics from 黑料不打烊 among the 44 new Fellows elected to the Society, all of whom represent the best of Wales鈥 academic, cultural and civic life.  

Congratulations to the new Fellows from 黑料不打烊,  Prof. Simon Creer, Professor of Molecular Ecology,  Prof. Judy Hutchings, Professor in Psychology and Dr Iwan Llewelyn-Jones, Senior Lecturer and Director of Music Performance.

Four 黑料不打烊 researchers selected for prestigious Welsh Crucible programme

Four 黑料不打烊 researchers have been awarded coveted places in the 2026 , an award-winning programme designed to foster personal, professional, and leadership development among future research leaders in Wales.

The four 黑料不打烊 University researchers are: Dr Hadia Almahli (right), advanced lecturer in medicinal chemistry lecturer at the North Wales Medical School, Dr Sarah Cooper, lecturer in linguistics at the School of Arts, Culture and Language, Dr Reshma Silvester, postdoctoral research officer in environmental microbiology at the School of Environmental and Natural Sciences and Dr Sophie Ward, Research Fellow at the School of Ocean Sciences.

North Wales on the big screen at Pontio

For the first time at Sinema Pontio, two original films from North Wales will be on the big screen in one month. This June, screenings of Madfabulous 鈥 based on the flamboyant Fifth Marquess - and Effi o Blaenau 鈥 a film adaptation of Gary Owen鈥檚 drama, Iphigenia in Splott, will be held.

Callum Scott Howells, Ruby Stokes and Rupert Everett star in director Celyn Jones鈥 masterpiece based on the fifth Marquess of Anglesey and filmed locally here in North Wales at the T欧 Newydd and Penrhyn estates. The film follows the life of Henry Paget who spends his family鈥檚 wealth through his social life and lavish, extravagant fashion before his death at the age of twenty-nine.  

Then, we look forward to a Welsh language film (with English subtitles), a cinematic adaptation of Gary Owen鈥檚 drama Iphigenia in Splott, by Marc Evans set in North Wales. Starring Leisa Gwenllian who delivers a powerful performance as Effi, who is hoping to escape her hometown and glimpses a new future after meeting injured soldier Lee.  

As part of the screenings there will be two special previews at Sinema Pontio in the company of the directors. On Wednesday 3 June, Celyn Jones will present Madfabulous in a preview that鈥檚 already sold out, followed by a question and answer session. Then on Thursday 18 June, in partnership with Met Film Distribution Marc Evans will hold a question and answer session after the preview of Effi o Blaenau.

Brambell Natural History Museum Open Day

The University鈥檚 Brambell Natural History Museum will be open on Saturday, 13 June, from 10am to 4pm, offering free, family鈥慺riendly activities.

The Brambell Natural History Museum displays specimens from the University鈥檚 zoology and geology collections. This includes full skeletons, skulls, taxidermy, antlers, entomology, molluscs, specimens preserved in fluid jars, fossils and minerals. 

These collections are part of 黑料不打烊 Collections and have achieved Museum accreditation, the standard for museums. The zoology collection is also used for teaching and this remarkable collection continues to inspire both the University and the wider community.

This event will provide a wonderful opportunity to explore the collection and learn more about the specimens on display. Visitors will also have the opportunity to speak with students who will be available to answer questions.

Booking is essential. To enhance the visitor experience and ensure good visibility of the exhibits, attendance will be limited to a set number of people per hour. Proof of booking will be required. Please book an hourly slot on our website. Your ticket will only be valid for the time you have booked and each visit will be limited to 45 minutes.

Alumni Reunion at the National Eisteddfod of Wales

黑料不打烊 will be heading to Llantwd, Pembrokeshire, for the National Eisteddfod of Wales from Saturday 1 August to Saturday 8 August 2026.

Our annual alumni reunion will be held on the 黑料不打烊 stand between 1.30 鈥 2.30pm on Wednesday, 5 August 2026, giving you the opportunity to hear from University Secretary, Gwenan Hine, and catch up with your fellow alumni and former staff.

Forestry@黑料不打烊 at the Royal Welsh Show

Forestry@黑料不打烊 are delighted to invite you to join them for the at the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show, Builth Wells, on Tuesday, 21 July 2026, 12.30pm 鈥 1.00pm.

Confor (Confederation of Forest Industries UK) have kindly offered to host the association鈥檚 inaugural meeting on their stand at the Royal Welsh Show and we鈥檇 be very pleased if you could join us. Attendance is free (other than entry to the Show) and a programme of talks is scheduled with plenty of time to catch up with each other and University staff and students over refreshments afterwards.

The Jack Darbyshire Memorial Lecture - Save the Date

The Jack Darbyshire Memorial Lecture will be held on 8 September 2026 and all are welcome.

The late Professor Jack Darbyshire founded the Department of Physical Oceanography at 黑料不打烊 in the 1960s and this lecture held in his name acknowledges the great contribution he made to the University.

Leading the lecture will be the School of Ocean Sciences鈥 multi-award winning Dr Iestyn Woolway, recognised globally for his research on the effects of climate change on global lakes and freshwater ecosystems.

Research participation opportunity - Navigating Uncertainty study

Are you aged 18+, based in the UK, and entered work, study, or training after 2020? If so, we'd be very pleased to hear from you.

Researchers at 黑料不打烊, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Cumbria are running a British Academy-funded study exploring how young adults think about work, careers and AI in employment 鈥 and your voice matters.

What's involved? One online discussion via Microsoft Teams 鈥 approximately 60-90 minutes. Participation is fully voluntary and confidential and all responses are anonymised. No specialist knowledge is required and full ethics approval has been granted. All participants receive a 拢20 Amazon voucher as a thank-you.

Conservation scientists undertake native oyster restoration project for species on the brink of extinction

Conservation scientists at 黑料不打烊 and  (Zoological Society of London) have completed work on an ambitious project to bring a species of oyster native to the UK back from the brink of extinction.

In the first scheme of its kind in North Wales, the dedicated team has restored native oyster habitat in Conwy Bay, providing a home for 2,000 European flat oysters, which were once a major part of Wales' fishing industry supporting coastal communities. The work has been supported by a working group of local community members.

Awen Oncology, a biotechnology spin-out company from 黑料不打烊 located in M-SParc, has secured a significant seven-figure investment to accelerate the development of its next generation cancer treatments. The investment will enable the company to progress key scientific milestones, bringing its flagship therapeutic program closer to clinical development, as well as supporting the creation of new high value jobs in Wales.

Awen Oncology was established on the basis of collaborative research at 黑料不打烊, with the company arising from research carried out at the University's North West Cancer Research Institute.

Challenging Myths and raising confidence to work through Welsh in North Wales

Over the past six months, an ambitious project, Challenging Myths, has brought together organisations and communities across North Wales to challenge misconceptions about using Welsh in the workplace.

黑料不打烊 is one of the organisations involved in the project, which is being led by the Welsh Language Sub-Group of the North Wales Public Services Board. Over the coming months, the project will share resources highlighting the real experiences of people who use Welsh in their everyday work, while also demonstrating that organisations value Welsh-language skills at every level when recruiting and supporting staff.
