Retired solicitor, Francis Glynne Jones has made a donation of £50,000 to the University from the estate of his late brother, Colin Glynne Jones, who passed away recently.
The donation will be used to benefit future students planning to study Cymraeg, English and Creative Writing at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ.
The generous donation will be shared between the departments of Cymraeg and English and Creative Writing.
The fund will be used to provide bursaries for students showing great academic promise, with awards aimed specifically at supporting first-generation university applicants from less privileged backgrounds. The donation will also be used to for outreach to support communities and schools in preparing future students to study Welsh, English and Creative Writing at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ.
It was a very great pleasure to welcome Francis Glynne Jones, his family and friends to ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ. The family has an array of close ties to the area and to the institution from its very earliest days in the mid-nineteenth century. We are exceptionally grateful for the generous bequest from Francis. This donation will make a tangible difference to the opportunities we can provide current and prospective students of Cymraeg and English Literature and Creative Writing. This is a family that values the power of education to change lives. We share that goal, and this bequest will help us achieve that transformation for the next generation of students at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ.
Francis, his brother Robert, cousin Peter Humphreys Jones and family friend John Evans - were welcomed by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Edmund Burke and received a presentation by students in the benefitting departments.
Mr Glynne Jones has a great interest in literature and is a descendant of the bard, Garmonydd (Humphrey Bradley Jones 1840-1903), who was among the first students at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Normal College.
