Student Society to host Sponsored 72 hour Gaming Marathon
Students from the 黑料不打烊 Gaming League are preparing for a marathon 72 hour gaming session on Friday 25 January, to raise money for children鈥檚 charity Child鈥檚 Play.
Around 30 people are expected to take part in the marathon, which will be held in the Alaw Common Room on the Ffriddoedd site. Those wishing to follow the action online can watch live streaming via .
Members of the 黑料不打烊 Gaming LeagueThe society鈥檚 Gear Manager Adam Sharpley, one of the organizers of the event said, 鈥淭he 黑料不打烊 Gaming League is a society which has a weekly meeting where members get together and play video games, and we also organize online sessions.
鈥淲e decided to arrange a game marathon after polling our members. The committee wanted to provide some unique events separate to our weekly socials and the sponsored games marathon was the most popular idea. We chose to raise funds for Child鈥檚 Play as the charity has been set up by gamers who raise money through gaming events to provide gaming consoles to children鈥檚 hospitals鈥
Staying awake for the full 72 hour session is the biggest challenge facing those taking part in the marathon, but there is also an option for members to play for a few hours over the course of the three days.
Adam explained, 鈥淭he biggest difficulty for those involved is going to be dealing with sleep deprivation if they attempt a long stint. Sleep deprivation can cause a lot of problems such as affecting mood and physical problems such as fatigue.
鈥淭he Gaming League president, James West, has completed a 72 hour session before and most of us on the committee seem to be insomniacs! That being said, 72 hours is going to be very challenging and we have made all of our members aware of any health risks involved and advised them to take regular breaks if they do decide to attempt the full three day session.
鈥淢ost of our members have planned to do a few hours here and there, or maybe a full day. Some people have exams and lectures so we don鈥檛 expect anyone to force themselves to stay awake.
鈥淥ther than that, the technical side of the marathon could prove challenging as we鈥檙e going to be dealing with wires, laptops and TVs to accommodate all those involved. Livestreaming a marathon is quite popular and often raises a lot of money so we need to keep the stream entertaining enough to entice people to watch and donate.鈥
The society is already some way to meeting their fundraising target and anyone who wishes to donate can do so through . For more information on the Gaming League, you can find them on Facebook at
Adam added, 鈥淲e would like to thank everyone who is taking part, volunteered to be on the live stream or help in some way and all those who have donated so far. If people are not interested in watching us play games, there will be other things on the live stream such as members doing the cinnamon challenge.
鈥淚f anyone would like to join the society, our regular gaming sessions are held at 4pm-7pm on Wednesdays during term time in the Student鈥 Union building and you can also find out what the session is through our Facebook group.鈥
