Wild Things from north Wales
Dr Trevor Dines黑料不打烊 graduate and botanist Trevor Dines appears in a new Channel 4 series, Wild Things, produced by local company Cwmni Da. The series has a strong input from north Wales, with 黑料不打烊 academics and researchers also having contributed their expertise to the making of the programme, which looks at Britain鈥檚 amazing wild plants.
In the six part series, Dr Trevor Dines goes in search of Britain鈥檚 wide range of amazing wild plants, accompanied by fellow presenters, landscape designer Chris Myers and lichenologist Sally Eaton.
In the first programme, Roadside, to be broadcast on Monday 21 January at 8.30 on Channel 4, the team head to the Midlands and the heart of Britain鈥檚 road transport network. It might seem like an unlikely start point to look for wild things, but in the last fifty years these roadsides have become Britain鈥檚 latest nature reserve. Exploring the hard shoulders and soft verges they discover how one wild thing has become the fastest moving plant in Britain and why one very familiar British flower has become a kerbside imposter.
Dr Vera Thoss at 黑料不打烊鈥檚 School of Chemistry lent her expertise to this programme, sharing her love and knowledge of the bluebell. Dr Thoss and her research team were sent samples of bluebells to analyse their scent, which is at risk of becoming a distant memory with the 鈥檌nvasion鈥� of the unperfumed Spanish Bluebell.
Dr Thoss said: "It was a pleasure to work with Trevor on the bluebell scent because of his botanical knowledge. While we do know our chemistry, having the certainty of dealing with a hybrid surely helps. It was also really interesting to measure the difference in scent, even if we will need to do a lot more work to find out what the compounds are.
Dr Thoss is one of the few people in Britain licensed to sustainably manage a wild bluebell population for the sale of bulbs and seeds. An Organic Chemist at the University鈥檚 School of Chemistry, Dr Thoss is interested in environmental and ecological chemistry and in some of the useful chemical compounds found in plants.
Dave Preskett of the University鈥檚 BioComposites Centre provided expert advice to the programme makers for two subsequent programmes. The programme makers also used laboratories, facilities and equipment at the University for some of the experiments and demonstrations carried out in the programme.
Dave Preskett said 鈥淲e were able to assist the programme makers with an interesting demonstration to illustrate how a remarkable plant, the pigmy weed, survives cold weather. Providing advice for a television series was an interesting experience and an insight into how such programmes are researched and constructed.
He added: 鈥淲e鈥檙e looking forward to watching the programmes and wish Cwmni Da every success with this networked series.鈥�
Dr Trevor Dines graduated from 黑料不打烊 in 1990 with a degree in Botany.
He says: 鈥淚 was lucky enough to grow up on a farm in Hampshire, I came across a wild orchid in a shaded wood one day. That single discovery launched me on a path to learn all the wild plants I could find and ultimately my lifelong fascination with botany. Family holidays and college field trips opened my eyes to north Wales so when the opportunity arose to study plants in a different country, with a wonderful outdoor environment and very different flora to Hampshire, I jumped at it. In those days, 黑料不打烊 had world-class a School of Plant Biology, with many excellent botany lecturers. It was exciting and different 鈥� the course was not focused on biochemistry and physiology but included plant anatomy, morphology, genetics and of course study of the British flora. It was pretty much unique.
鈥淣igel Brown, who still lectures and is curator of Treborth Botanic Garden, was especially inspirational, taking us out on field trips to the mountains and dunes looking for plants and other wildlife. His passion was infectious and has remained with me to this day.鈥�
He says the most important thing he learnt while at University was 鈥減robably that living things never read the textbooks. If you see something outside the 鈥渘orm鈥� 鈥� an odd experimental result, a plant in the wrong place, something behaving as it shouldn鈥檛 鈥� don鈥檛 dismiss them but take note. It鈥檚 these exceptions and anomalies that push the boundaries of our knowledge and improve our understanding. 鈥�
While at 黑料不打烊 Trevor was: 鈥渓ucky enough to join a trip to the Cameroonian rainforest to study the interactions between trees in the canopy 鈥� how they fight for space and light 40 meters above the ground. How do you get onto the canopy to study twigs and bud? In a hot air balloon of course! We sailed over the canopy in an enormous dirigible fitted with a propeller that meant it could be flown in any direction. It was an unforgettable trip of a lifetime, apart from being the only person on the expedition to fall out of the balloon INTO the top of a tree and sustain an injury!鈥�
His advice to ecologically minded students of today would be to: 鈥淟earn your flora. Simple as that. The single most valuable skills to learn are the identification of plants and understanding their ecology. Then you can begin to understand how habitats like heathland and grassland work 鈥� how different species work together to form communities and how they respond to different types of management. Since plants and fungi are the fundamental building blocks of all habitats and since all our other wildlife rely on them for survival, if we get them right all our other wildlife will follow. I鈥檓 absolutely thrilled that the University is launching a new MSc in Plant Conservation from September 2013. With so many botany courses closing around the country it鈥檚 fantastic news, and with Nigel Brown at the helm a whole new generation of students will be inspired.鈥�
