Overview
I am focused on exploring microplastic pollution in the Conwy River as part of my PhD research, funded by the NERC RED-ALERT. My work investigates microplastics from a range of point and diffuse sources, including wastewater treatment plants, combined sewer outflows, stormwater drains, and atmospheric deposition. I aim to understand how seasonal changes and hydrological events influence the transport and fate of microplastics, particularly under extreme weather conditions.Â
A key part of my research also involves studying how biofilms interact with microplastics and affect their ability to bind with pathogens. Through this research, I hope to contribute to a deeper understanding of the risk posed by microplastic-associated pathogens and to inform more effective pollution mitigation strategies that support the health and sustainability of freshwater ecosystems.
