Lynda is a Quaternary geomorphologist, with principal emphasis in fluvial and pro-glacial sequences. Her doctoral research was focused on northern England, and the River Tyne sequences that developed post-glacially. She is interested in Quaternary environmental change and fluvial histories, including geoarchaeology, relict glacial environments, and flood risk and hazards. Lynda's research takes a critical physical geography approach combining insights from geomorphology, politcs of risk and disasters, and community-led responses around climate change and cultural heritage to promote socio-eco transformations and environmental justice. Lynda is a key voice in the geographies of education, an advocate of inclusion and accessibility in geosciences, and the use of virtual technologies to enhance learning.
Lynda has held NERC-funded grants (PI and co-I) ( ClicHer), and Shore to Shelter (Engaging the Public with Environmental Science). She has also been awarded funding from the British Council, the Learned Society of Wales, the Royal Geographical Society, and the Higher Education Academy. Ìý
She is the Degree Programme Director for the Geography programmes at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ. Lynda is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG). She was the Chair of the RGS-IBG Geography and Education Research Group (GeogEd; 2021-2024).Ìý
Lynda has studied and worked in a number of UK Universities. She began her career at Northumbria University (BSc.), went on to Durham University (MSc.) and completed her Ph.D. at the University of Hull. She worked in industry prior to her undergraduate degree and following her Masters' degree. She worked as a Junior Research Associate in the early 2000s on a number of Aggregate Levy Funded projects. She was a post-doc at the University of Liverpool.Ìý

- Five years since the Covid-19 panademic expedited the transition to online and alternative forms of field trip delivery and learning experiences within higher education, what progess have we made since 2020 and where are we headed in the future? This talk will explore the development of new learning environments and new approaches to fieldtrips to provide inclusive and accessible field-based learning in both the field and in virtual spaces. We will explore the digital approaches (e.g. StoryMaps, Google Earth Engine, cloud-based, social media), and blended approaches to learning that not only enables students to pre- and post-visit field sites but has ensured that learning has become more interactive and activity-led through scaffolded exercises, guided tours (360 imagery, pieces to camera field delivery), the opportunity to gather data remotely, and the advent of live field broadcasts and private 5G networks to facilitate the digital collection of data and co-working between those on site and those back in the department. Finally, we will consider if these more equitable approaches do address issues of accessibility and inclusion for many students, and are the future of fieldwork. - 28 Aug 2025 - Links:
- Around the world, the environmental crisis is deepening. Rising global temperatures are fuelling socioecological threats and damage with distinctly uneven geographical consequences. Whilst rapid and drastic reductions in carbon emissions are critical to preventing climate breakdown, our institutional, societal and individual responses have to-date fallen short of what is needed. In the context of this urgency, how we respond now will profoundly reshape the geographies of our lives and will continue to do so far into the future. As geographers we have a crucial role to play not only in analysing and anticipating these changes but also in advocating, as researchers, collaborators, teachers and citizens, for more sustainable futures. - Here our speakers - all leading thinkers in environmental geography and currently shaping agenda-setting themes in Geo: Geography and Environment - address the place of geography in advancing and advocating for more sustainable, lower carbon and fairer socio-ecological places and futures. They will reflect on their own experiences and research interests and in doing so address questions and debates that speak directly to the vision of Geo as a space for new, critical, and underrepresented ideas in pursuit of fresh viewpoints and solutions to the world's most pressing environmental problems. - 27 Aug 2025 - Links:
