Last evening, students at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ had the pleasure of hearing from Joe Egan, an experienced legal professional who shared his personal journey in law and pre-law openly and engagingly. The talk was jointly organised by the Law School at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ and the Confucius Institute, following a recommendation from Mike Blyth, and offered students a welcoming space to learn from real experience.
Drawing on a rich and varied legal career, including his time as President of the Law Society, Joe spoke honestly about the challenges and opportunities of studying law, building a career, and finding direction within the profession. He shared practical insights into the realities of legal life and offered clear guidance grounded in experience. Key messages included the importance of meeting people, treating everyone with equal respect in order to build a strong client base, and developing resilience when facing difficult clients, challenging judges, and professional setbacks. He emphasised that failure is part of the journey, but persistence is essential, encouraging students never to give up.
Students found the session particularly helpful for its clear, practical advice on decision-making, resilience, and how to make the most of their time at university. Thoughtful, encouraging, and inspiring, the talk gave students a clearer sense of possible career pathways and the confidence to take their next steps with purpose and clarity.
The session concluded with an active question-and-answer discussion, where students asked thoughtful and considered questions about career choices, professional development, and life beyond university. This exchange added real depth to the evening, allowing students to connect more personally with the speaker and reflect on how his experiences might inform their own future journeys.

Project description: During the pandemic, the UK awarded numerous public contracts to large companies exceeding £30.2 billion, via emergency procurement decisions. In the same period many SMEs, including those in Wales, seemingly lost out on these opportunities. Immediate analysis as to the reasons for this is required, particularly given Wales is disproportionately reliant on SMEs to sustain its economy. We will investigate the impact of Welsh public bodies' emergency procurement decision-making on SMEs' ability to achieve sustainability.
Funding awarded through the ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Innovation and Impact Award (Research Wales Innovation Funding). Value = £9579
