How do you cut back in order to save up?

Dr Gwion WilliamsDr Gwion WilliamsThe interest we can get on bank accounts is key to our ability to save up, according to financial expert, Dr Gwion Williams from 黑料不打烊's Business School.

In 2017, families across Britain only managed to save up 3% of their monthly income on average, the lowest rate in half a century. On the whole, one in four families managed to save only 拢95.

Dr Gwion Williams has been offering advice to S4C鈥檚 new reality TV series, Y T欧 Arian (Thursday, 19 April, 8pm), which offers six families from across Wales the opportunity to learn more about their spending habits in order to save up for a specific purpose.

Families from Lanfrothen, Merthyr Tydfil, Aberystwyth, Caerphilly, Brithdir (Dolgellau) and Waunfawr spend 48 hours in the 鈥楳oney House鈥 discussing their spending habits and undertaking financial challenges before receving feedback, where we get to see how successful they鈥檝e been and what they鈥檝e learned from the process.

What hampers our ability to save up?

The series will raise a number of questions about the factors which affect our ability to sav money and to save up 鈥 from overspending on things we don鈥檛 need to the fast pace of life. But the problems which arise are certainly not unique to the 鈥楾欧 Arian鈥.

Dr Gwion Williams said: 鈥淚f people are busy, they鈥檙e more likely to buy takeaways and so on. It can cause people to spend more money where they really don鈥檛 need to. It鈥檚 part of the fast pace of life, which means people have less time to think about their money and banking.

Presenters Leah Hughes and Dot DaviesPresenters Leah Hughes and Dot Davies鈥淭here are a lot of adverts on TV telling people how easy it is to change [energy] provider but people just don鈥檛 have the patience to make the effort to do it. If they realised how much money they could save themselves, maybe they鈥檇 start thinking about it.

鈥淥ne thing I saw from doing the series is that people don鈥檛 realise how much money they spend over the year. They say they spend too much on food or electricity but they don鈥檛 know exactly how much they are spending.

鈥淚f I were to count it all up, it would be easy for the families to see how much they spend and where they鈥檙e overspending. But is your every day family going to put that effort in themselves? Not everyone will go to a financial advisor to get details of their spending.鈥

Saving money in five simple steps

Many people say they don鈥檛 have time to assess their financial requirements in detail, so Dr Gwion Williams has come up with five simple steps to help you save up.

  1. 1.      An ISA account is not the best one to use for savings. There is a better interest rate available on current accounts or regular savers accounts. It depends how much money people have to set aside. This is because of the personal tax allowance, which means that the first 拢1,000 is tax-free. ISA isn鈥檛 taxed, but current accounts are taxed. But if you鈥檙e in the 40% tax bracket and amongst the highest earners, the ISA account maybe the best option after all. People鈥檚 income in Wales is lower than that of the rest of Britain, so they鈥檒l be punished more heavily.

  1. 2.      Keep an eye on utility bills. I noticed that the families in Y T欧 Arian were spending a lot on gas and electricity. You can look around for better deals. Do you need the heating on throughout the day? A lot of people overspend on heating. But they could have a look around on websites to see how they can save money on electricity and so on, or have a look at their bank account. But a lot of people say they don鈥檛 have time to do these things. That鈥檚 what I鈥檝e seen in this series, but it only takes five minutes to change energy provider.

  1. 3.      Take your own food to work. Don鈥檛 buy a meal deal for lunch. It will save a lot of money in the long run.

  1. 4.      Look for a better broadband deal. A lot of you spend more money than you should be spending.

  1. 5.       Consider a new mortgage on your house. This isn鈥檛 relevant to everyone. If your mortgage is fixed-rate for five years, it鈥檚 not worth changing it. But for those of you on a variable rate, it鈥檚 worth looking at.
