鈥業nternational Mother Language Day鈥 celebrated at 黑料不打烊
Some 黑料不打烊 students getting involved in Mother Language day at the University. On Wednesday the 21st of February, students at 黑料不打烊 celebrated 鈥業nternational Mother Language Day鈥
With students from nearly 90 countries represented at the University, the day celebrated the linguistic diversity at 黑料不打烊, with students from all over the world promoting and sharing their own language.
The University鈥檚 International Student Support Office (ISSO) worked with the School of Modern Languages and Cultures and 黑料不打烊 LangSoc student society to celebrate the day. This involved a pop-up event on campus, where students pinned more than 100 personal messages on a world map written in their own mother languages, highlighting the unique cultural mixing pot that is 黑料不打烊. This was followed by an evening gathering at the Belle Vue Pub, with 4 talks from students and staff about minority languages and the importance of their conservation, together with a languages quiz.
Marcel Clusa from the ISSO was hugely impressed with the range and diversity of languages spoken by students at 黑料不打烊. He said:
Marcel Clusa鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 believe the amount of written messages we had by the end of the day. So many different languages! And every single one spread positivity, peace and unity, showing how languages can bring people together. Groups of friends were showing up, none of them speaking the same mother language, but clearly demonstrating that friendship and love can break any barrier, be it cultural, geographical or political. This is something we should all embrace and learn from, especially in the present international climate. It was fantastic.鈥
